Antique Turkoman Rug Gallery
The Turkoman region is an important one for Persian rugs. Turkoman tribal rugs are hand-woven by the people of nomadic tribes using the same techniques as their ancestors. They're known for beauty and durability. The bold weaving style associated with Turkoman region can be traced to the 13th century, when the Mongols invaded and settled in the area. The influence of the distinctive Turkoman patterns can be seen throughout the Persian rug industry. Turkoman tribal weavers use the symmetrical Turkish knot in their rugs. The pile is woven of thick and lustrous wool, handspun from local sheep. The foundations are usually made of cotton, but wool and goat hair are sometimes used. The wool is colored with natural vegetable-based dyes.
